Dear all
Last week I sent you a preliminary assignment: to discover as much as possible about the municipality of Vlaardingen, near Rotterdam, and to read two very general papers about spatial planning. The idea is that you write down your questions about the papers so we can discuss them once you are here.
In this email, I explain the rest of the assignment to be completed before you arrive here. NOTE: Please realise we want you to enjoy your experience here, so please let us know if you can accomplish these tasks and whether you encounter any problems. The main work will be done here, so you do not need to get stressed now!
1. The most important question we need to answer is: WHY DO WE NEED TO PLAN AND DESIGN FOR WATER RESILIENCE? What are the main issues connected to urban development and water in your country/in the Netherlands/ in the case study? How can spatial planning and urban design contribute to more sustainable and liveable cities and how does designing with water can help us achieve those objectives?
You need to formulate a small paragraph answering those questions. Even if you are not a specialist, you can try to answer those questions by doing some preliminary research on the internet. You will hand over your paragraphs when you arrive here.
2. The second assignment is to try to discuss among yourselves what are the main issues connected to water and urban development in China or Taiwan and The Netherlands. Are they different? What is the attitude of planning and design communities in China or Taiwan and the Netherlands concerning these issues?
To help you fulfil this task, I am sending a link where you can download a package with maps and planning documents from the Netherlands. Most material is in English. To help you in your task to compare the planning attitudes in China and Netherlands, our friend and colleague Liang Xiong has compiled a list of possible sources in Chinese. You don’t need to read all this! This is just a list of suggestions. Again, you don’t need to read all these documents, but you should be aware of them and find one of two that help you explain differences between China, or Taiwan and The Netherlands.
